WHAT PEOPLE SAY
I was hired as a ropes course and climbing wall instructor. When I initially heard about the camp, I didn't know what I was getting myself into outside of just working the ropes course. Once the kids got there, I found myself learning so much of why this camp was needed through the counselors and especially the campers. So I gave more of myself to the campers. I acted as a counselor. I talked, walked, played, and even shared lasting memories with them. I feel beyond blessed to have accepted the call to make an impact on kids, even when there was an unknown (I knew nothing about [the transgender community]), I found a way to relate and reach out. I helped to make sure that these kids understood how important it was to not necessarily conquer their fear, but to simply take a chance which is what we do everyday the moment we put our feet on the floor to get out of bed.
To the parents, thank you for entrusting us with your child.
To the campers, thank you for sharing your world with me.
To the staff and administration, how does it feel to be a role model? Take it in... You deserve it!
To everyone, CONGRATULATIONS...YOU HAVE NOT ONLY STARTED A CAMP BUT YOU HAVE MADE HISTORY!!! I'm glad I got to share it with you.
My child had a fantastic time at Camp Lilac! She stepped outside of her box and went rock wall climbing and kayaking and stomped through muddy trails, along with participating in some tried and true favorites, like crafts and dancing. She came home exhausted and smiling and with a whole tribe of new friends in the other campers and the staff.
Camp Lilac has been the most amazing experience for most of these kids and counselors. It provides a safe, accepting environment for everyone and these kids are having a ton of fun and making connections and being themselves without any fear or reservations. It's truly an amazing thing to see! I highly recommend it for both the youth and for counselors!
